FAQs
What is existential counselling and coaching?
Existential counselling and coaching explore the fundamental questions of human existence, such as purpose, meaning, freedom, and responsibility. Rather than focusing on diagnosing or “fixing” people, existential approaches help clients navigate life’s challenges, fostering personal growth and a deeper sense of self-awareness.
Who can benefit from existential counselling?
Anyone facing significant life changes, feelings of disconnection, or a desire for greater meaning in life may benefit from existential counselling. It’s also valuable for those who feel stuck, confused, or overwhelmed by modern pressures and want to explore their inner purpose and core values.
How is existential counselling different from traditional therapy?
Unlike traditional therapy, which may focus on specific symptoms or diagnoses, existential counselling emphasises the broader questions and choices individuals face. It centres on building awareness of personal freedom and responsibility, helping clients make choices aligned with their authentic values and goals..
How does existential coaching work?
Existential coaching provides a structured approach to exploring your purpose and values. Sessions typically involve reflection on your choices, actions, and their alignment with what you value most. By examining barriers and patterns, existential coaching encourages you to live more intentionally and take empowered actions toward your goals.
What are common topics discussed in existential coaching sessions?
Common topics include meaning, identity, values, relationships, and personal purpose. Other areas may involve handling uncertainty, coping with change, understanding and overcoming fears, or addressing feelings of “stuckness” in life.
How long does it take to see results with existential coaching?
Results depend on your goals and commitment. Some clients experience insights and shifts after just a few sessions, while others find that the work requires a few months to make lasting changes. Often, clients notice increased clarity, confidence, and self-understanding within 8-12 weeks.
How is success measured in existential counselling?
Success in existential counselling is subjective and personal. Rather than aiming for a specific outcome, success may mean gaining clarity on personal values, achieving a greater sense of purpose, or feeling more confident in making meaningful choices. Progress is often reflected in clients feeling more authentic and less reactive to life’s challenges.
Will existential counseling help me overcome anxiety and fear?
Existential counselling can help you understand and address anxiety and fear, especially as it relates to uncertainty, life purpose, and self-identity. By exploring your values and beliefs, you can better cope with fear and develop resilience to handle challenges without letting fear dictate your choices.
Can I combine existential coaching with other forms of counselling or therapy?
Yes, many people find existential coaching complementary to other types of therapy. Existential coaching can enhance other approaches by providing a broader, values-driven perspective. However, it’s always important to communicate with any therapists or counsellors involved to ensure a cohesive approach.
